  • July 2010 Ukraine Mission Trip...

We thank and praise God for the challenging and wonderful July trip to Kyiv Ukraine.  It was challenging because of the extreme heat (the hottest summer in recorded history—129 years), no air conditioning, the demanding schedule, jet lag, a flight delay and the physical stress.  On the other hand the difficulties seem hardly worth mentioning when compared to the blessings and the wonder of seeing God at work.  This report is a companion to the video slide show.

The first 30 some slides document a Day Camp held at Brovary Baptist Church outside of Kyiv.  Our team from Calvary Chapel Fluvanna and CC Green worked together with CC Kyiv to provide sports & other outdoor activities, arts & crafts, face painting, praise and worship, and Bible time.  The focus was to provide a fun filled atmosphere where the children, most who don’t attend church regularly, could experience the love of God and hear the gospel.  Brovary Baptist Church works closely with CC Kyiv and the goal was to involve more children and their families in the church where they can hear the gospel and grow in faith.  Even though Ukraine is considered a “Christian” country, few people attend church and the overwhelming majority knows little of the Bible and does not understand the gospel message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.  That is the reason why we go.

Sam and Noah were surprised when Sasha invited them to participate in her weekly live counseling show on Christian radio.  Their answers to the call-in questions were a good testimony & witness of their faith in Christ.  Later in the week Warren was interviewed on a Christian TV show which centered on missions at home and around the world.

We were blessed again to attend CC Kyiv’s monthly babushkas’ (grandmothers’) tea, a time of fellowship, worship and Bible study for 36 ladies.  For most, this is their only church.  Tammy taught a Bible class and the pastor’s wife distributed a 200 day supply of multiple vitamins provided by our team to the ladies.  This gift was greatly appreciated because many of these ladies are in poor health and vitamins are way too expensive for them to purchase.

We did a one day camp in Volodarka village, near Chernobyl, the sight of the horrible nuclear disaster in 1986.  This is the 3rd time we have visited this village where Sasha does an after school Bible club.  The kids had a great time and our team was able to bless 4 families in the village with school supplies and groceries.  Our last Saturday afternoon was spent with CC Kyiv in their street-ball outreach event.   They organized a basketball competition in a neighborhood near the church and between games shared the gospel.  Bill was able to tell his testimony to the players and spectators and Warren attracted lots of kids with this twisty balloons.  The balloons are a real icebreaker and provide a good way to make friends and present the gospel.

Too many other events took place to list in detail.  We were able to speak in two churches, do a day camp for HIV positive kids (no photos allowed), share about witnessing with a home Bible study, do some street witnessing, etc.   One of the greatest blessings was the wonderful fellowship we shared with the precious brothers and sisters of Calvary Chapel Kyiv.  We are inspired and convicted by this small church's commitment and actions to reach their community and the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

An interesting twist to our adventure occurred when we arrived at the Kyiv airport Monday morning and learned that our flight to JFK had been canceled!  All worked for good though, as the airline provided us with a day of much needed rest in Kyiv and....an evening in Paris!

We thank God for a fruitful trip and a safe return home.  We also thank our churches and everyone else involved who helped make the trip a success.  While glad to be home, part of our hearts remains in Ukraine and we look forward, God willing, to future trips.

Is God calling you to be a part of the next trip?

  • from Kyiv...

We are all well here in Kyiv, despite the hottest summer on record.  Tomorrow is our last day at the Day Club in Brovary Village.  Please pray that many of these kids will choose to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.   Thursday we will be visiting a group of babushkas (older ladies) that Calvary Chapel Kyiv have been ministering to and Friday we head out to one of the villages we visited last time to do a program for the kids.  Saturday is street outreach with the church here.  Please continue to hold us up in your prayers.  Thanks so much.  God bless.

  • Youth Parade Outreach...

The Middle School evangelism team went to the Scottsville Independence Day parade Saturday and passed out gospel tracts to the crowd.  Over 1500 seeds were planted and many people were reading the tracts to their children while waiting for the parade to begin.  This was the first street outreach experience for most of the youth and they all did great.  Pray that the gospel message contained in each of these tracts will bear fruit for God’s Kingdom!

Janna, Rachel, Devon & Madeline heading to the parade.

Prepared with $2 million bill tracts and children's gospel pamphlets.

Children and adults eagerly received the tracts.

  • Haiti Mission Trip...

    Written by Terri Wood

This summer I was one of a group of 11 (representing California, Virginia, Kansas, and Oklahoma) who was privileged to go to Jacmel, Haiti and minister to the beautiful folks there.  Even before the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in January, the Haitian people have lived in the most poverty-stricken country in the Western Hemisphere.  Most are hungry, homeless, and jobless.  But many and more each day are finding hope in Jesus Christ due to partnerships with churches and missionaries from all over the world.  We were able to love on the people there in the hospitals, orphanages, schools, villages, streets and churches.  We saw God lifted up and people saved.  God blessed what we were doing and sometimes showed us in tangible ways.  If I could go back tomorrow and knew it was God's will, I would go.  I miss them so much and thank God and you for sending me.  Please pray for them and the ministry of Calvary Chapel Haiti Initiative.  This organization is there for the next several years and their vision is to see people come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ as their Lord and to help the people build an economy and a future.

  • Prayer Station on the Mall...

Saturday, June 19th, 14 people, including teens and children from Calvary Fluvanna and Calvary Green, set up the Prayer Station on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall.   The Prayer Station design was modified to meet the city’s standards for vendors.  Even though our vendor space was located in a low traffic area, we were still able to pray with and witness to many precious people.  Several of the youth were street witnessing for the first time and all are anxious to go again.

We offered prayer, gospel tracts, and free cold water.

The remodeled Prayer Station.  We offered prayer, gospel literature, and free cold water.

Adrianne witnesses to a man from Colombia.

Brad encouraging a homeless couple who recently moved to town and are searching for employment and housing.

We passed out gospel tracts in Spanish, Chinese, and English.

    Happy street evangelists.
